The DUI/Drug Court Program, offered by Troup County Accountability Courts, is designed to promote public safety by identifying non-violent offenders with substance use disorders and providing them with the treatment and support necessary to achieve long-term recovery. Through a combination of judicial supervision, accountability, and evidence-based treatment, the program works to reduce recidivism and improve the overall well-being of participants and the community.
The program focuses on addressing the underlying causes of substance abuse, helping participants develop healthier lifestyles, and reducing the burden on the criminal justice system. By participating in DUI/Drug Court, individuals are given the opportunity to remain in the community while receiving structured treatment and supervision rather than serving extended periods of incarceration.
The DUI/Drug Court Program is a minimum 12-month program that includes intensive supervision and treatment. Participants are required to attend all scheduled treatment services, including individual counseling, group sessions, and self-help meetings such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA). Participants must attend at least two self-help meetings per week and are responsible for the cost of their treatment services.
Participants are required to appear regularly before the Honorable Judge Wesley Leonard for progress review hearings. These court sessions provide an opportunity for the judge to monitor compliance, recognize progress, and address any non-compliance. In addition, participants must submit to frequent and random drug and alcohol testing, typically conducted at least twice per week until the final phase of the program.
The program also requires participants to complete community service, pay court-ordered fines and fees, and comply with all program rules and expectations. A system of graduated incentives and sanctions is used to encourage accountability and reinforce positive behavior throughout each phase of the program.
In addition to treatment and supervision, DUI/Drug Court provides access to supportive services that promote long-term success. These services may include assistance with obtaining a driver’s license, securing employment, continuing education, and connecting participants with community resources.
Participation in DUI/Drug Court does not eliminate accountability for DUI or other criminal offenses. However, individuals who choose to participate and successfully engage in the program may receive reduced jail time and fines, allowing them to focus on recovery and rebuilding their lives.
